Jim Leonhard: Competition for roles on Badgers' defense is good

Jim Leonhard joined the Big Ten Network's fall camp bus tour to discuss his second year as defensive coordinator of the Wisconsin Badgers, and how the Badgers replace several players on defense after graduation hit Wisconsin hard on that side of the ball.

Leonhard said that last year's veterans helped him transition to the defensive coordinator role, and that group has passed the torch this year to the younger players.

He added that the biggest emphasis in camp has been working on communication and situational defense, since younger players haven't been in those situations.

Leonhard is also happy with the level of competition in camp, since there's open roles and plenty of talented players to fill them. He pointed to the cornerback group as being the most competitive so far in camp. He noted that Scott Nelson has jumped out in the lead for the starting safety spot opposite D'Cota Dixon.
